Attested:  Gildas chapter 19 tithicam vallem, probably in about AD 540.

Where:  The seas crossed by post-Roman raiders, scottorum pictorumque gentes, i.e. Irish and Scottish (in modern terms), in curucis ‘coracles’, therefore presumably the northern Irish Sea.

Name origin:  Greek ocean goddess Τηθυς .

Notes:  Is it possible that Gildas knew about Plutarch's account of Demetrius's travels, mentioned here?
