Attested: Birila at position 285 in the Ravenna Cosmography
Where: One of the islands off western Scotland discussed here.
Name Origin: βηρυλλος/beryllus ‘gem of sea-green colour’.
Notes: No convincing argument fits this name to any particular island, but Gigha is naturally green and fertile and it fits the Cosmography's sequence of names. Irish géag ‘tree branch’ might support that idea. Gigha is also a candidate to be Ptolemy's Επιδιον island, as distinct from the Kintyre peninsula.
